Lots of snow ! Good day to bake - Birds Molasses Cookies

Snicker doodles and chocolate chips. Try to get three types done - we will see.
Birds Molasses Cookies were the ones Patty let me get into her cookie swap with.  Very high standards, she wouldn't let me in unless they did a taste test ! Made these with Bird (Joan) and Cindy Buddenhagen.  Nearly lost the 30  year old scrap of paper I have the recipe written on so I will document here:

Birds Molasses Cookies  375 F 10-12 minutes
3/4 c shortening ( like crisco)
1 c white sugar
1 egg
1/4 c molasses
2 c flour
2 t soda
1/4 t salt
1 t cinnamon
3/4/t cloves
3/4 t ginger
small bowl with 1/4c white sugar
Mix All but small bowl of extra sugar till crumbly
make balls ( 1inchish)
roll in bowl with sugar to coat
put on sheet
Bake 8-9 minutes, remove sheet from oven. Press thumb into
cookie to make depression. Fill with Jam. Bake 2-3 more
minutes.
Alternate - can omit the press and jam step and make plain.

Happy Turkey Day !!!

Doing the Turkey ! Got a fresh turkey from Gozzi's Turkey Farm in Guilford (see the colored Toms and Hens  that were spared the fate of the one I bought!)  and used the Alton Brown Recipe (below) - I 1 &1/2 times the ingredients to accomodate a 23-24 lb bird and cook for 4- 4 1/2 hours. Have used this recipe and technique for a number of years now (Mom and Dad were stlill alive when I started). There will be about 20 of us going to Patty and John's.

The Lucky Birds!

The End Result !

Shared our meal with friends and family - lots to be thankful for.

Good Eats Roast Turkey
Recipe courtesy Alton Brown

Ingredients
• 1 (14 to 16 pound) frozen young turkey

For the brine:
• 1 cup kosher salt
• 1/2 cup light brown sugar
• 1 gallon vegetable stock(I make with Knorr Veggie bullion)
• 1 tablespoon black peppercorns
• 1 1/2 teaspoons allspice berries
• 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped candied ginger
• 1 gallon heavily iced water

For the aromatics:

• 1 red apple, sliced
• 1/2 onion, sliced
• 1 cinnamon stick
• 1 cup water
• 4 sprigs rosemary
• 6 leaves sage
• Canola oil

Directions
2 to 3 days before roasting:

Begin thawing the turkey in the refrigerator or in a cooler kept at 38 degrees F.
Combine the vegetable stock, salt, brown sugar, peppercorns, allspice berries, and candied ginger in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally to dissolve solids and bring to a boil. Then remove the brine from the heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate.

Early on the day or the night before you'd like to eat:

Combine the brine, water and ice in the 5-gallon bucket. Place the thawed turkey (with innards removed) breast side down in brine. If necessary, weigh down the bird to ensure it is fully immersed, cover, and refrigerate or set in cool area for 8 to 16 hours, turning the bird once half way through brining.

Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Remove the bird from brine and rinse inside and out with cold water. Discard the brine.

Place the bird on roasting rack inside a half sheet pan and pat dry with paper towels.

Combine the apple, onion, cinnamon stick, and 1 cup of water in a microwave safe dish and microwave on high for 5 minutes. Add steeped aromatics to the turkey's cavity along with the rosemary and sage. Tuck the wings underneath the bird and coat the skin liberally with canola oil.

Roast the turkey on lowest level of the oven at 500 degrees F for 30 minutes. Insert a probe thermometer into thickest part of the breast and reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. Set the thermometer alarm (if available) to 161 degrees F. A 14 to 16 pound bird should require a total of 2 to 2 1/2 hours of roasting. Let the turkey rest, loosely covered with foil or a large mixing bowl for 15 minutes before carving.

Water Fire in Providence RI

A group of us took the Amtrak train to and from Providence RI from New Haven. Train was a nice way to travel. Went to see waterfire Very impressive. Very nice city. River fronts are very people friendly. Lots of college kids. Need to go in and explore Providence again. Video clip below gives you an idea of the sites and sounds. What you can not appreciate is the feeling of warmth from the fires while standing on the river banks and the fragrence of the buring wood.

Great Party and Off to the Camp Site

Had a wonderful time at a co-workers end of summer BBQ last night. John Bartalotta throws a great party. He is a great cook, not your normal BBQ faire. Fried ravioli, homemade stuffed breads, Clam Chowder, kielbasa (done 2 ways), steamed mussels with crusty bread, chicken francaise( sp ???), roasted potatos, roasted peppers and onions and steaks done to perfection, after dinner apertiffes with coffee and espresso. He is a wonderful host and he was extremely pleased with my hostess gift - 24 YuengLing beers - 12 Premium and 12 Lager - put them right in his down stairs fridge - not for the pary goers as was my intent. Thanks to my cousin Evan for picking them up for me in NY as they are not available in CT.

Today it is off to Hammonasett Beach for camping with my Cousin Kathy for a couple of nights. Looks like good weather - will be brisk - perfect for campfires!

Coney Island !!!

A great start to the Labor Day Holiday. A day at Coney Island, Brooklyn New York with some dear friends.  Little run-down and tackey now, but must have been magical during it's hey day. What a beautiful sandy beach.

Here's Claudia in front of the Shore Hotel. She stayed there on vacations as a youngster with her parents (she was still living in Germany, her dad had to return periodically to the USA to maintain his citizenship) . Too bad it's closed like so many other properties in the neighborhood.

Its hard to lose someone you love. Feel for the family. Church service very nice. Lots of family members participating in the service. Beautiful rendition of Ave Maria. Grandchildren and nieces and nephews each read a line in the responsorial prayer using lines from Senator Kennedy's speaches. Very touching. A fitting send off.

It's a tough life for a Cat

My Miss Kitty is an escape artist - she can not be contained in my cat "San Quenton" so still gets out in the world at large. She got into a fight with something Tuesday night and came home with a big gash through the skin that exposed the musles. She is lucky - my vet was able to sew her up. My niece Ashley's kitty was not so lucky this week - the vet could not do anything to help her after her fight and kitty had to be put down. So sorry Ashley, it is very hard to loose a pet.

Sad Passing

Sadly Bill Ryan passed peacefully with his family at his side at 2:00 am this morning. Thank you for being there for my daughter.

Unsettling and Sad News

Received upsetting news late yesterday. Bill Ryan, has taken a turn for the worst and doctors hold out little hope. Family called to bedside to say goodby.... Sarah went ..... it is only a matter of time now. Only so much a body can take. My heart and prayers go out to his family. The Ryan family, Kerry, Mom Ryan and Dad Ryan have been close friends of Sarah since middle school in Seymour providing much friendship and support. Bill had a tragic accident that resulted in severe burns. He has been in the Bridgeport Hospital Burn unit since July 14th. His blog is on my blog list. Hold the Ryans in your thoughts at this very difficult time. One more thing that makes you appreciate what you have and how life can change forever in an instant .......

Family, Food, Fishing and Tornados

Family, Food and Fishing........

Lots of Food and Fun !

Fishing was Fun ! We practice catch and release. I was told that I was the winner of the most fish caught but I was not counting - Boys said I landed 10! Mostly white perch, a couple of big Sunnies and a couple of baby pike. Even though they are not very big the white perch hit the bait hard and put up a good fight! Steve caught the only bass ( according to Dave a rock bass).

Now to Tornados>>>

Friday July 31, 2009 at around 4:00 pm an extreme storm passed through the Stratford/Shelton border near work. Lots and lots of damage, trees broken into pieces and strewn about, lab flooded at work - on way home obvious, unusual damage seen on southbound side of Parkway - trees broken like matchsticks, Route 110 also was closed ( my first pathway home - had to turn around) Well today the national weather guys confirmed what I already suspected - a tornado in the Pine Rock Park area of Shelton. Second confirmed tornado in CT this summer. Crazy weather for sure.
